Hand to Hand Scenarios
Deadliest Street Fighting Techniques #3
by on Jul.19, 2009, under General Principles, Hand to Hand Scenarios
The third in my series of the deadliest fighting techniques is an internal force strike to the heart. I this context an ‘internal force strike’ basically means a strike which transmits the maximum amount of force inwards to the bodies internal organs, rather than dissipating it at the point of contact as you would want to if you were trying to break someone’s nose or cause some other superficial wound.
Looking at the heart strike is a good way to learn about this kind of attack, although as with all of these deadly techniques it is not something which I would advise you to go out and use. The basic principle is the same one which is used in CPR to restart a persons heart when it has stopped, only in this case it would have the opposite effect - stopping the heart. In order to achieve this you need to cause a compression of the chest which is best achieved by pushing rather than striking. All of these kind of internal force strikes, which can be used to knock the wind out of a person or attack the kidney’s (very painful and debilitating) as well as the heart, aim to cause this kind of compression. The trick is to do it quickly with a strike.
With an ordinary strike you would want to keep your arm relaxed up until the point of impact, when you would tense your whole arm and dissipate the force of the strike into the surface of their body, and you would want to be using all of your power when you hit. For this kind of attack you want to be using very little power when you make contact, but then increase to full power as you strike, and try to keep your arm relaxed as it makes contact.
This is difficult to describe adequately, as you really need to get a feel for it yourself to understand. The best way to do this is to find something to practice on which is capable of being compressed. An old car tyre standing up is good, but anything that allows for a decent amount of compression will do the job. To start off with just hit it in the normal way (wear gloves or use your palm, or you’ll hurt your hand) and you will see that there is very little give. Then use the first part of your strike just to make contact with your target as quickly as possible, without trying to put power into it until immediately after you have made contact. You should definitely use your palm for this, as it is much more effective than a fist. See how much more give there is, and you will begin to see how to do this strike. Keep practicing then to make sure that there is no pause at the point of contact and to learn how to transmit as much internal force as you can.
Gaining Control: Voice box Hold
by on Jul.03, 2009, under Hand to Hand Scenarios, Self Defense for Women
This technique is used regular by police officers and is a great way to pacify an attacker and gain control over them. Basically it just involves using your thumb and forefinger to grab and apply pressure to either side of the voice box. This is easier to do on men, because it is so easy to find the right place just by going either side of the adam’s apple, but it does also work on women. You can find the correct place on yourself by running your thumb one side of your voice box and your finger the other side, then gently pushing inwards and then squeezing your fingers lightly together so that the tips of your thumb and forefinger push in behind it. You really don’t need to push hard when doing this to cause pain, and more importantly to make it very clear to them that you can cause serious injury by applying more force. The psychological effect of this technique is perhaps even stronger than the physical effect, as it is a very unpleasant and scary feeling. The only weakness of this technique is that your opponent can get out of it by pulling backwards, so you need to either have a firm grip on them with your other hand, or have them backed aginst something so that they can’t back away further.
Self Defense Against Sexual Assault: Elbow Lock
by on Jun.22, 2009, under Hand to Hand Scenarios, Self Defense for Women
I thought it was about time I added another post in my self-defense for women section, and particularly about defense against sexual assualt, as this is the main issue specific to women and one that I have only touched on lightly before. This is a specific technique for a very specific scenario, but I will be adding more later to cover a wider range of circumstances.
So here is the situation: you are lying on your back, your attacker is between your legs, most likely with your knees raised up, you are struggling and your attacker is trying to subdue you by hitting you. It is worth noting that this position, the most common position immediately prior to a full sexual assault, is a common defensive posture used in mixed martial arts called the guard, so there are a large number of proven techniques that can be used to defend yourself in this situation (although not all MMA techniques would be appropriate).
And here is what you do: As your attacker hits you grab hold of their wrist. This shouldn’t be hard to do, as long as you can overcome the natural instinct to just try to block the strike - you may have to just let them hit you in order to concentrate on making the grab, but it is worth making this kind of sacrifice. At the same time you should twist your body to the side lifting whichever of your legs is on the same side as the arm they used to hit you and throwing it across in font of their face so that the back of your leg is against their head or neck. From here it is actually fairly easy to apply a very painful joint lock that is perfectly capable of breaking the arm at the elbow simply by straightening your body and flattening yourself against the ground by pulling their arm and pushing their head with your leg so that you end up lying on top of their arm - then just pull up on their wrist whilst using the weight of your body to keep their elbow down. You woulod be suprised how little strength you need to use when doing this to cause exreme pain and even to break the arm at he elbow joint (which is a much worse injury than a regular fracture).
For a bit of further information on using arm bars as a defense fromthis position here is a video showing how it is used in mixed martial arts fighting:
Deadliest Street Fighting Techniques #2
by on Jun.14, 2009, under Hand to Hand Scenarios
In my first post in this ‘deadliest techniques’ series I looked at the stomp, and of course my previous posts on groin strikes and on fighting dirty probably fall under this category too. In this post I want to look at something that is even more devastating and deadly, so it I feel that I must repeat my earlier warnings that techniques such as this primarliy for information only, and should only be actually used in the most desperate circumstances - particularly in the case of this technique situations in which you must quickly incapacitate an opponent, such as if you are fighting multiple opponents and need to make sure that one attacker is out of action so that they can’t get back up and stab you in the back or something.
The technique that I am talking about is the knee smash to the spine. It is great for taking someone out of action instantly, but can break the spine and end up leaving the person it is used on paralyzed or dead. Basically begins with grabbing your opponent in a head lock so that their body is in front of you, their neck held under your armpit, and their head behind you. There are various ways you might move into this, but a common one would be to side step a punch and turn so that you are standing next to them facing the same way as they are as you grab them and pull their head backwards. At the same time as pulling their head back and down so that they have to bend their body backwards you then drive your knee up into the spine. The shock of this will always cause temporary paralysis / severe difficult getting back up and moving around, but as already stated it can also quite easily maim or kill, so should not be used lightly.
Street Fighting Video

You can learn a lot about how to defend yourself in a street fight by watching videos of people actually doing that. OnlineFightVideo.com have just added a street fighting videos section to its regularly updated blog featuring the best fight videos. Unlike many other sites that have this kind of thing the videos which get included are all hand picked for quality, and all of the videos in this new section feature demonstrations of real martial arts and self defense skill rather than just clueless thugs going at each other, so you really should be able to learn somthing from them. Its still new so there aren’t many videos there yet, but the site is still well worth a look
