Knife Defenses Video Tutorial
by on Mar.18, 2009, under Defense Against Weapons
I’ve just been looking through online videos from various sites demonstrating knife defense techniques, to see if I could find anything good, and I came across this video which I think is a real gem. The techniues are from Hapkido, a martial art that I’ve never had much contact with or known much about, so it was a nice surprise. There are a good number of defenses demonstrated, covering different attacks, but from my perspective the best thing about them is that they don’t put you in any danger if you fuck them up. Nobody can ever be 100% certain of always doing a technique correctly, especially when you are taking it out of the gym and using it in a real situation for the first time, and over the years I have seen so many people demonstrating fancy, complex ways to defend against a knife attack that look great when you get them right but have the potential to put you in serious danger if it goes wrong. Everything demonstrated in this video is based on a reliable block or dodge followed by a way to disarm them that doesn’t leave you too open if they break free:

Ouch, I felt that back-kick to the groin in the last one. Game over!
Thank you so much for putting this up; I have something I fear I’ll have to deal with shortly and this is what I need to know. I particularly like the way it’s commentated.
But what about a knife in each hand and/or more than one attacker?

Hi, thanks for the comment, I’ll try to add some stuff on these scenarios soon.

these moves seem to be a good defence against a someone who has no idea what he’s doing. the off hand on the attacker was always clear so as not to add to the fight. most people that have been in combat with a knife knows the the knife is going to be the focus of the defender and that leaves the off hand to do some damage, if nothing else as a distraction to get the knife hand into play effectivly. also as soon as the “block” or ” “check” was made on the knife hand, the attacker froze to allow the defender to perform his move. this doesn’t happen in a real life, as all things are moving, and moving fast. the truth of it is your going to get cut if you fight a semi-experinced knife fighter. the judo throws are fancy but timing and reactions are a must. its best to know some fast one shot strikes to disable an attacker, and how to avoid the blade. strikes such as throat shots, knee kicks or find a longer ranged weapon for yourself, and avoid the blade with a coat or shirt wraped around your arm for a “shield” so as to block the knife

to add one more thing that every street fighter needs to know, there are 3 things you NEED to have to fight,…air, mobility, and vision..so when i say one shot strike to disable the badguy.. these are what you focus on
